Past negotiation and mediation approaches emphasized a focus on strategies and tactics for working out the transactional nature of a deal, and the degree of parties’ satisfaction with the process.
Today, and in the pandemic evolution, we’ve shifted to a heightened awareness of how much our parties in dispute resolution have been impacted and how much more important it is that we listen to what’s going on for them, supporting them as they navigate through to resolution of the conflict, not just settlement of the legal issues.
With the advance of neuroscience coupled with the pain of what’s transpired during the COVID years, our clients demand a different kind of service (and attention) from the advocate/mediator professional.
We know that feelings influence outcomes. We know that emotions convey information that can be used strategically if we know what to look for. And we know there are readily available techniques to reduce emotional intensity (without being a psychologist). What are they?
This program presents to the advocate/mediator professional behavioral science strategies to bring this together.

- Gain a ‘brief’ on the brain: rational, emotional and behavioral aspects of conflict (15 min)

- Develop a framework for deepening your focus and attention for deep listening and mindset shift (15 min)

Dr. Debra Dupree is a Dispute Resolution Specialist, Conflict Coach, Mindset Doc, and International Trainer and Keynote Speaker.
Dr. D is the host of the bi-weekly podcast ‘Decoding the Conflict Mindset’ bringing ‘thought leaders’ from various disciplines to gain insight on engaging self and others in difficult conversations, high emotions, and tough negotiations. She is also the host and creator of “The Agile Lawyer-Mediator Interview Series” designed as a virtual mentorship from the skills and insights from 12 topnotch advocates and mediators throughout the U.S.A.
Debra delivers training throughout North America, Australia, India and the Pacific Rim in workplace mediation strategies and advanced mediation strategies for leaders and dispute resolution professionals for today’s hybrid workworld. She was awarded a spot as one of the top ten trainers globally by SkillPath Corporate Strategies in 2016. Dr. D was the former Director of Training for Mediation Training Institute (MTI).
She currently serves on the the Employment Mediation Panel and Faculty for the American Arbitration Association (AAA), on the Board of Directors for the Southern California Mediation Association (SCMA), and on the Planning Committee for the ABA Dispute Resolution Section.
When not facilitating mediations, training, or engaging in keynote presentations, you can find Debra out on the water kayaking, on her electric boat in the Cays entertaining, or walking her beloved Snickers along San Diego Bay.
